Watercolour Step by Step Demonstrations

Evening, Blackwater River

I was immediately attracted to this wonderful subject.

The sinking sun created a shaft of light straight through the centre of the subject, diffusing the background trees & cutting out the shapes of the moored boats.

The water surface shimmered with warm light.

Materials Used:

Paper: Arches Block 140lb 'Not'

Colours: (Winsor & Newton Artists' Quality tube Watercolours)

Raw Sienna, Raw Umber, Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Violet, Viridian,

Burnt Sienna & Permanent Magenta.

Brushes: Nos. 2, 4, 8 &10 Sables

               No 2 Rigger.

Masking Fluid

Step 1:

The drawing was undertaken using a 2B pencil

Next, all the relevant highlights were 'masked out' using Masking Fluid.

Initial washes using the following colours were then prepared:

Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean, Viridian, Raw Sienna,

Raw Umber, Cobalt Violet, Permanent Magenta & Burt Sienna.

The paper was then wetted over its entirety.

Step 2:

The paint was then added to the damp paper, using predominantly 'pure' colours, allowing the pigments to mix & diffuse on the paper.

The paper was then left to dry completely before the next stage.

Step 3:

The backdrop of trees was added on to the now dry paper, but using a 'wet into wet' method.

The mixes used were:

Cobalt Blue & Raw Sienna

Ultramarine Blue & Raw Umber

Ultramarine Blue & Permanent Magenta

Step 4:

The middle ground boats & Landing Stage were painted using mixes of:

Ultramarine Blue & Burnt Sienna
